Breaking News - Race Report Stage 1 - Bhutan


At an emotional start ceremony 350 school children from the Punakha Secondary High School sang the National Anthem of the hosting country of Bhutan and sent our runners off at the start of the 7th GlobalLimits Bhutan – The Last Secret -

The race started at the most famous fortress of Bhutan - the Punakha Fortress, at the Punakha valley, between the Po and Chu Rivers.
The Lamas from the Fortress blessed our runners for good weather and a safe race. When the chanting finished, our runners started their epic 6 days, 200km journey through the beautiful landscape of Bhutan. They passed the longest suspension bridge in Bhutan at check-point 1 and run through small villages and picturesque farmlands.

The finish line is at the Chorten Nyingpo Monastery at 1756m, 31,3km away. The weather condition is great for run – light wind at about 18c at the start.

US runner Joel Anderson is the first male in this stage in a course record time of 2:35hrs. Close fight for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th rank. They were just 28 seconds apart with American Bryan Gentsits in 2nd in 2.:42hrs Xavi Marina from Spain in 3rd and Frank Johansen in 4th.
At the female side,youngster Chimi Dema from Bhutan finished the stage as the fastest female in 3::32hrs. Kelly Ridgway-Smith from USA takes the second place in 3:40hrs and American Alison Graham takes the third place in 3:58hrs.

Tonight they will camp in the courtyard of the Chorten Nyingpo Monastery in 1800m altitude.

At tomorrow’s Stage 2 (29,3km), our runners will run through a 19km scenic ascend to the Sinchula Pass at 3,400m, heading to the Thimphu valley and arriving at the home of one of our Bhutanese runner, Zamba. His family has been hosting GlobalLimits’ runners since our first race.
