We are a highly professional organizing team and have been running in extreme races ourselves for more then 20 years. Moreover, we have a proven track-record in organizing several events.

The experience that we have gained around the world by participating in, and organizing such races, enables us to stage a well prepared event and cater to our competitors' every possible need.

Our professional multi-lingual team will be accompanied by very motivated and experienced volunteers as well as a local team of experts in organizing outdoor events in remote areas.

Stefan Betzelt / Founder and General Manager of GlobalLimits

Stefan was born and lives in Wiesbaden/Germany. He founded GlobalLimits in 2012. Stefan has a wealth of extreme racing experience, having participated in many of the most gruelling ultra races, such as Marathon des Sables, Les Foulees de la Soie, Himalayan 100Mile Stage Race, Racing the Planet Namibia and Desert Oman Raid. He also participated in about 20 city-marathons (2:46) and successsfully climbed the Kilimanjaro and the Mount Aconcagua.

Stefan has visited more than 85 countries and learnt a great deal about different cultures and people. He now makes use of this experience to select outstanding and unique locations for the GlobalLimits races.

Stefan has worked as a managing director for some of the leading global financial institutions before he retired in 2004 to become a self employed financial and personnel consultant.

Stefan is also a member of the Curatoship of the Institute of Sports Medicine in Frankfurt/Germany.

Pavel Toropov/Great Britain - Course Director

Pavel is Russian, but was raised in London, and now lives in China. He runs as a semi-pro on the trail running circuit in China and is also a freelance translator working with Chinese, English, Russian and Spanish. In addition, he also works as a guide and consultant for outdoor brands working in China. Pavel has worked on setting several race courses in Asia and is an experienced outdoor person having climbed extensively around the world and crossed South America solo by bicycle. He is a biologist by training, a graduate of Queen Mary and Westfield College of the University of London.

Pavel already served as course director in the race in Sri Lanka 2015 + 2016, course director in the inaugural race Albania 2017 as well as volunteer in Bhutan 2015 and Cambodia 2015.

Ryan Paterson, Denver/USA - Medical Director

Dr. Ryan Paterson attended the University of Vermont School of Medicine and completed his Emergency Medicine Residency and Fellowship in Wilderness/Altitude/Expedition Medicine at Denver Health Medical Center/University of Colorado. He also holds advanced certifications in Tropical Medicine from the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (DTM&H) and in Mountain Medicine (DiMM). He is a practicing Emergency Physician for Kaiser Permanente at St Joseph’s Hospital in Denver, Colorado.

Dr. Paterson serves as co-course director for the Wilderness Medical Society and Universities of Colorado and Utah’s Diploma in Mountain Medicine Course (DiMM). He is the current United States delegate to the International Society of Mountain Medicine (ISMM). Currently, Dr. Paterson is working, in partnership with CU South Denver to develop a Wilderness Medicine for Kids program utilizing an original curriculum. He also serves as medical director for No Barriers and another non-profit (Kolkata City Mission) working to establish sustainable development solutions in education, health, women’s empowerment, micro-enterprise and public-health for informal communities in and around Kolkata, India.

Ryan already served as a race medical director at GlobalLimits Cambodia 2016 and Bhutan 2017.

Andrea Ferrai/USA - Race Medical

Andrea is an Emergency Physician in New York.  Prior to starting medical school, she had training as a Wilderness First Responder and EMT that enabled her to serve as a backcountry guide and ski patroller both at resorts and in the backcountry.  She also put her skills to use as a volunteer on an alpine search and rescue team in California.  Throughout her medical training, she continued her involvement in wilderness medicine through interest groups and wilderness medicine electives.  She is currently working as an academic physician and completing a fellowship in Wilderness and Expedition Medicine.  She has volunteered as part of the medical team at the NYC Marathon multiple times as well as Grand to Grand and the Jungle Marathon stage races.  She is looking forward to joining the GlobalLimits team in Cambodia.

When not working, Andrea can be found hiking, skiing, running, reading, cooking and enjoying the food and entertainment of New York City.

Andrea already served as a doctor at GlobalLimits Cambodia 2017.

Teresa Lam, Hongkong/Germany - Volunteer

Teresa is from Hong Kong and now based in Germany.  She counts her first ultramarathon experience back in 2008.  Since then she has been a runner in 7 GlobalLimits races including Albania, Bhutan, and Cambodia.

She hopes everyone enjoys long distance running as much as she does!

Kinzang Wangdi, Thimphu/Bhutan - Volunteer

Kinzang recently has done his guiding training under the Bhutanese Tourism Management.

As the running route is on partly on his daily hikking routes, Kinzang knows the terrain and course perfectly.

He already served as a  volunteer  in GlobalLimits Bhutan 2015, 2016 + 2017.

Geert Meese, Tielt/Belgium - Volunteer

Geert is a Belgian medic who decided to work a little bit less and spending  more time doing his passions: multi stage racing ( 100 km del Sahara, Marathon des Sables , Grand to Grand ….) , marathon racing , or volunteering in multi stage races ( Spain, Portugal, Oman …). a passion he sheares with his wife.
If not working or racing , his time is spend abroad with a high preference for unbeaten tracks in Asia or South America.  Always enthusiastic  to help participants to make their dreams come true.

Geert already served as a volunteer for GlobalLimits in Cambodia 2015 + 2016 and Bhutan 2016 + 2017 and the inaugural race in Albania 2017..

Patricia Schellekens/Belgium - Volunteer


Patricia works as a registered nurse on the ER and intensive care of the University Hospital of Antwerp,since 1991

She speaks Dutch,French,English and some Spanish

She enjoys travelling, running, hiking, cycling and working as a volunteer on different kind of events.

Patricia ran some 100K, some marathons and a lot of smaller races.

Patricia is a very well experienced volunteer, in the medical and non-medical team. She already served  in several races: MdS, Andalusia Ultra Trail, Grand2Grand, KAEM, Legends Trail, Tomorrowland, Triathlons.

She enjoys helping people achieve their dreams of crossing the finish line.

Patricia already served as a volunteer in the inaugural race in Albania 2017.



Tashi Gyelthen, Thimphu, Bhutan - Logistics and Infrastructure

Tashi is our local co-operation partner, joined the tourism and hospitality industry in 1998 after he completed his studies.

From 1998 to 2000 he had been working as a trekking and culture guide, from 2001 to 2003 he leaded a group from around the world specialized in trekking and hiking. In 2004 he has worked for Aman Resort, an international hotel and tourism company.

In 2005 he founded his own company, Bhutan Men-Lha Adventures.

He personally completed all the trekking routes in the Kingdom of Bhutan, from low altitude trekking to the highest altitude trekking.

He have also been around the world for almost 27 countries and learnt different cultures and traditions and can understand travelers needs while traveling in Bhutan, Nepal, Tibet and India.

He participated in FITUR Travel Fair in Central Madrid (Spain), in ITB, Berlin, ITB, Singapore, WTM, Central London, IITM Mumbai (India), SATTE Fair in Delhi (India), 50PLus Expo in Singapore, ITE in HongKong
