Pre-race Report: 2nd GlobalLimits Saõ Tomé – The Hemisphere Crossing
The second GlobalLimits São Tomé – The Hemisphere Crossing, a 200km, 6 stages ultra-running event, is going to take place in the west African island nation of São Tomé and Principé between 16-24 June 2021.
GlobalLimits is proud to present the untouched natural beauty of São Tomé to our runners again - the thoroughly planned race course is bringing our runners through local communities, endless cocoa plantations dotted with the coral-coloured Erythrina blossoms, refreshing waterfalls, and unspoilt tropical forests. After each stage, they rest in campsites set in botanical gardens, pristine beaches, and local communities.
Apart from enjoying the tropical paradise, we are anticipating a fierce competition among our runners:
Apart from enjoying the tropical paradise, we are anticipating a fierce competition among our runners: Samuel Castela (Portugal), the Portuguese National Spartan runner (and he recently won the race in Andorra), and two second places in GlobalLimits Cambodia 2019 and Albania 2020. And what can we expect from Guillaume Taufflieb (France)? He is a long-term resident of São Tomé and 4th in our race last year.
On the lady’s category, Filipa Castela (Portugal), the captain of the Portuguese national Spartan team, 7 time GlobalLimits podium winner Christina Khinast (Austria) and 5 time podium winner Teresa Lam (Hong Kong) are the favorites for this year. All 3 have been together on the podium in Albania last year... time for revenge...
To support the local running community, 4 local athletes are joining us this year: Claudia, Ineias, Luizildo and Wilma. Are they going to continue the legacy of Ismael and Julio - the local duo that took the first and third places in our race last year?
In addition, we are please to announce the participation of Brent Weigner (USA) and Edda Bauer (Germany) in our race. Brent is the world record holder in running marathons and ultra marathons in most number of countries (186!). Edda is a holder of various world records in ultra marathon running in her age group. Her longest completed race is a 2000km non-stop race.
With previous experience in organising multi-stage race during the pandemic, GlobalLimits will continue to maintain the highest safety and hygiene standard in the race, to ensure the safety and good health of our group and the local communities. Our measures include providing participants solo tents, encouraging frequent hand washing and social distancing, etc.
In this very difficult period of time, the race would not be possible with the supports of our runners from around the world, GlobalLimits’ international team, the government of São Tome and our local partner, Mucumbli Explorer. We are grateful and look forward to organising another safe, fun, adventurous and exciting race for you!
The race starts on Sunday, 18th July at 7am local time.
