March 2020 - Mayra Johnson (Brazil) (in English and Portuguese)

Meet Mayra – our Portuguese native speaking runner  in GlobalLimits São Tomé – The Hemisphere Crossing.  A native of Brazil with Japanese heritage and lives in India, she is a mother of two, food lover, and much more.  She had run all our races and been our volunteer and Pilates instructor in Albania – How does she found running in another Lusophone country?

1. Please introduce yourself.
Hello, I am Mayra Johnson, born and raised in Brazil, living in Asia for the past 17 years, currently calling Mumbai (India) home for the past 7 years and counting. Because of all my moves I feel like I already lived a few different lives, from working in the airline industry, to investment banking and now, a Pilates instructor, NGO volunteer, a food lover and a mother of two very active boys. Fell in love with running, more specifically, for trail running about 5 years ago.

2. Did GlobalLimits' Sāo Tomé meet your expectations?
Absolutely! I can easily say that the São Tome race exceeded my expectations.
First for putting the island of Sāo Tomé and Principe on my radar, I am not very proud to say it but I had to peak at the map when the race was first announced.
Second, for being so well organized and for having not the easiest, but the most amazing, beautiful and untouched trails. Sāo Tomé is a very blessed place with its lush jungles and abundance of food that grows everywhere.
Last, but not the least, this race was like a big family reunion. Everyone on these races comes from all over the world and as we don't get a chance to see each other very often, it was a huge treat to catch up with everyone and to meet some new faces.

3. You joined GlobalLimits races as a runner and a volunteer. What is the difference?
I think the main difference is that as a runner, your job is to make sure you are fine, and as a volunteer, to make sure that everyone else is. But one is not better than the other though. I love being a runner as much as I loved being a volunteer.
As a runner I don't miss one bit of the scenery, terrain and get to go back to camp and talk about all the funny and hairy bits of the day, in other words, I get the full experience! As a volunteer, I got to pay back and forward to all the amazing volunteers that have crossed my way over the years. They work really hard from very early in the morning till very late at night to make sure everyone is safe, healthy and well. They also play a huge role on supporting the runners emotionally, whether is emphasizing the enthusiasm when you are feeling great or having that word of encouragement during your not so bright moments.

4. Which one of GlobalLimits' race is your favourite?  Why?
I knew this question was coming and it is a really head scratcher! Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Bhutan and Sāo Tomé.... I loved them all! They all have their own special people, special moments, beautiful sceneries, unique culture and their "Aha moments". But I must say that Sāo Tomé was a bit special for me because it reminded me of home, its language, music, people, fruits, it was all very familiar. And the kindness and the hospitality of the locals were just outstanding!

5. Tell us about your special experiences/ favourite moment in São Tomé, especially you are our only native Portuguese speaking runner in the race (besides our local runners).
I had quite a few special moments as the kindness of the locals were endless . Running in the rain was just amazing! But puzzling the locals was always entertaining. When this Asian looking lady started to answer in Portuguese or make comments along the way on what they were saying, made all of them very confused or speechless. I also found it very sweet and funny when, at one point, when I was not looking so bubbly, a local person offered to find me a taxi so I could get faster to where I was going (and no, I did not take the taxi! hahaha....).

Portuguese:

Qual é a diferença?
