History was made today at the final conclusion of GlobalLimit’s The Wild Elephant Trail  Multi Stage Race.  After 210 km of running and walking through forests, trails, and village paths through 35 degree heat and 80% humidity 52 runners crossed the finish line.  All 52 runners had started the race 6 days ago, an incredible first 100% finish rate for Global Limits.

This race was also the first ever multi-stage ultra-running race in Sri Lanka. 

The runners left camp at dawn this morning to run or walk the final 13.8km and then climb the 1860 steps carved into the side of the famous Sigiriya Rock to reach the finish line on the summit.  Intermittent stunning views were interspersed with dramatic light and banks of fog and rain which pelted down on some of the relieved finishers.

The success of this race was assisted by an excellent support team with a ten person strong international volunteer crew, including two doctors on the medical team.  A large team of local crew made camp every day, set up hot water every evening for runners, and drove the four wheel drive vehicles and tuk tuks that transported water and volunteers from check point to check point. 

The elated runners and their support team are now relaxing in the 5 star resort which is also the location for the final award ceremony.
