Pre-race Report: 3rd GlobalLimits Saõ Tomé – The Hemisphere Crossing -
We are back! The 3rd GlobalLimits São Tomé – The Hemisphere Crossing, a spectacular and exciting ultra-running event, is going to take place in the island nation of São Tomé and Príncipe, off the coast of equatorial Africa, between 18-26 February 2022.
Our runners from 16 nations, with 5 of them already been to all GlobalLimits races, will be running the 200km course in 6 stages. The course will lead them through cool canopy of cocoa and coffee trees, refreshing waterfalls, and untouched tropical forests. After each stage, they will rest in campsites set in botanical gardens, on pristine beaches, and with local communities.
Apart from enjoying the tropical paradise, we are anticipating a fierce competition among our runners:
Nathan Montague (UK), former runner in the English National Team, performance coach and GlobalLimits’ training advisor as well as GlobalLimits course director for Bhutan and Albania.
Sascha Gramm is a top ultra running athlete from Germany. How is he going to perform in his first GlobalLimits’ ultra?
Sao Tomean Ineias Dias, ranked 4th in the last race in the male category. His return shows his determination to fight for a podium place.
Of course, surprises are not new to us. The three gentlemen are expected to have a fierce competition against the other runners, including our local athletes this time: Duliê Fontes, Nelsinsha, Daniel and Dainira, who had already showcased their running potential in the local half-marathons.
Besides local athletes Nelsinsha and Dainira, we also have strong international contenders in the female category with Harri Washington (UK), our podium winner in Albania 2018 and beloved crew member. As a long term resident in Cambodia, she must have acclimatised for the weather in São Tomé better than anyone else. We also welcome the return of Christina Khinast from Austria. She is a podium veteran of GlobalLimits - with an impressive 7 GlobalLimits podium trophies already in her pocket!
We are also pleased to see the return of Maria Rotger (Spain), a 2 times podium winner of GlobalLimits in our race.
Last but not least, our legendary German runner Edda Bauer is joining us again! If you have not followed her in our last race in São Tomé, Edda is a holder of various world records in ultra marathon running in her age group. Her longest completed race is a 2000km non-stop race.
GlobalLimits will continue to maintain the highest safety and hygiene standard in the race, to ensure the safety and good health of our group and the local communities. Our measures include providing participants solo tents.
Again, the race would not be possible without the supports of our runners from around the world, GlobalLimits’ international team, the government of São Tome, our local partner, Mucumbli Explore and the generous support of Aqua Bom Sucesso, Valudo, CST and Paderia Almar . We are grateful and look forward to organising a safe, fun, adventurous and exciting event!
The race starts on Sunday, 20th February 2022 at 7am local time.
